How To - CV Writing For Idiots Part 1

If you want a job, you need a CV, but how do you write one if you have no idea how to? CV writing is a skill and one that everyone needs to master if they hope to be employed by anyone other than a family member.

However, few people are equipped with the necessary information and as a result, many job seekers find it a daunting task, often paying someone else to write it for them.

CV writing is not as difficult as many people believe it to be and once you have the basics, you can create a good CV in a relatively short space of time.

The first step is to gather together all of the information you need file it in one place. The older you get, the more difficult this becomes, as you accumulate more experience and more qualifications, attend short courses and gain more life experience.

So it is a good idea to start immediately and develop the habit of keeping everything together, so that it is ready the minute you need to produce a CV.

You should have a folder for all of your certificates - exam results, degrees, professional qualifications, proof of short courses such as first aid and IT. Names and addresses of referees should also be kept in this folder, as should testimonials that you have been given, plus any other documentation you might need for your particular career.

You should also create an online file with details of all your past jobs, schools and qualifications with dates, addresses and if possible, your job descriptions. It's a good idea to save old job descriptions, as they can help you identify your transferable skills and remind you of many tasks you'd forgotten you could do.

Once you have assembled all of your information, you are ready to move on to the next stage, in part 2.
